Tips to Conserve Water in Your Home

Tips to Conserve Water in Your Home

Water is a basic necessity. It plays a huge role in our lives. From small chores to big ones, everything is done with the help of water. It is an essential element in our lifestyle. Many of us fail to realize that clean and freshwater is a limited source on this earth. With several droughts taking place in different parts of the world, now more than ever, we should take responsibility and do our part in conserving the environment. Without water, there is no life.  Our planet is made up of 70% water and many places are suffering a great shortage of water supply.  When we think about conserving water, we think about starting from our homes.  Keeping our water clean and conserved is important for the following generations to come.

If we realize just how scarce clean water is, we can come up with different strategies and techniques to conserve water, improve its quality, reduce wastage, increase water supply and etc. Over utilizing water can negatively impact the environment and others’ lives which are why conserving water is super important.  Save the planet and conserve water easily one step at a time by following these ways

  • Shorter showers save water: The average time a person takes in the shower is 8 minutes. An average old showerhead consumes 5 gallons of water per shower. Taking shorter showers has proven to be an effective technique in saving and conserving gallons of water every day.  Take a 4-minute shower by standing washing the hair, body and face with water for 2 minutes, soaping and scrubbing with the shower off for 1 minute and rinsing the body the last minute. This saves 1.2 gallons of water every day per person. Cutting up your average shower time from 8 to 4 minutes can save up so much water on a daily basis. This water can also be used for other daily routine tasks.
  • Check for leaks: Just imagine how many liters of water you might have wasted due to faulty fixtures and leaks in your household plumbing system. Water would constantly be flowing and dripping and damaged faucets would leak gallons of water sometimes. Fixing the leaks can conserve so much water. Because of leaks and damaged faucets, a huge amount of water is lost every year. You can call in a certified professional to identify the leaks and fix them with their own techniques or apply some DIYs to avoid future leaking.
  • Don’t unnecessarily run appliances and machines:  If you load up half of your dishwasher with dishes, then you can lose a huge amount of water per use. Using your laundry machine to only wash one pair of jeans can prove to be very wasteful. Appliances and machines use a huge amount of water, and losing a precious amount of water is ineffective in conserving water for the future. Load up the machine only once or twice per week to save gallons of water per week. You can also switch to energy-efficient machines and appliances that don’t consume a lot of water and energy to finish off daily tasks such as automated showerheads and energy-efficient dishwashers.
  • Know how to wash your car/vehicle:  Washing a car takes up to 100 gallons of water. Don’t use a water hose to wash your car. That would be the biggest waste of water. Many car washing places are designed to filter and recycle the water to wash and perform other tasks. Many systems monitor the amount of water used per wash in professional car washing services.
