Plumbing Problems That Arise After Heavy Rains

Plumbing Problems That Arise After Heavy Rains

There is nothing more pleasant than rain, especially after a long period of drought. However, sometimes these torrential downpours can soon be turned into a disaster, leaving you with leaking pipes and dripping roofs.

You may think that your pipes are perfectly fine, or the drainage system is working fine and are in excellent condition. However, after the torrential downpour, you may face leakage problems or plumbing issues that might be caused by these external factors even though your pipes are in excellent condition.

Plumbing or drainage problems can arise and can do severe damages after a heavy spell of rain, especially in places where there is a significant influence of drought. We have listed down three major plumbing problems that arise after heavy rain and how to prevent them.

Blocked or Clogged Drains
The drainage system of your home could be clogged due to heavy rain, and an excessive amount of dirt and wreckages can pile up inside the pipes and can block the drains. This issue is prevalent, and almost everyone faces this after torrential downpour because our domestic drainage system isn’t designed and compatible to efficiently manage such large amounts of water along with all kinds of trash at the same time. To resist such a problem before heavy rain, there must be a misty sewage smell discharging out of your drain; this is the first sign that your drains soon could be a clog, and it needs proper professional drain cleaning before the rain comes. To avoid this problem, try regularly cleaning your drains and pipes beforehand, or it may damage your home and will leave a sewage smell for a long time.

Broken Pipes
Heavy rains after a long spell of drought can cause the pipes to dry out and can cause cracks, and once it starts raining, it can cause your dry pipes to break. You are most likely to face this issue if the pipes are worn out or older. You can detect a burst pipe by noticing a change in the color of water or water is coming with low pressure, or there is dirt coming out of the faucets; this means that your pipes are broken. Replace or repair your pipes immediately to avoid facing further problems.

Flooding
A flooded basement or crawl space can cause many problems; it can ruin your furniture or rot the wooden floor or, in the extreme case, can do severe damage to the foundation of your home. It would be best if you considered removing the water as soon as possible, it may cost much, but there is nothing you can do after the damage is done. However, for the future, you can install a sump pump or wet vac to avoid any such issue. Also, do not let the space air dry because there would be some amount of water after cleaning puddles of it, which can also do some severe damage. Use a dehumidifier, which is extremely useful in removing the moisture and drying out the damp places. It will considerably reduce the chances of the presence of any water in your basement.
